Family Decision Making through the holding of Family Group Conferences is a participative process, involving extended families in planning for the protective needs of one of their children following State intervention. This specific technique has been part of child welfare practice in New Zealand since 1989, is reinforced by legislation, and was described in a previous article in Australian Social Work (Ban 1993). The technique has been trialled in a pilot project in Victoria, Australia, and preliminary outcomes following evaluation have raised challenges to social work practice in the Australian statutory child protection field. Some of these preliminary findings and issues for social workers are outlined here. |
