Practices for Political Impact and Practice Theories for Profession Building

Titel: Practices for Political Impact and Practice Theories for Profession Building
Auteur: Dixon, Jane
Verschenen in: Australian social work
Paginering: Jaargang 45 (1992) nr. 4 pagina's 9-20
Jaar: 1992-12
Inhoud: The readily available community work literature provides divergent views of the value of community work. The practice literature presents optimistic accounts of community work's contribution to 'planned' social change. In contrast, the radical community work literature is dismissive of any social change claims. By focusing upon community work's political nature at the expense of professionally driven acts, much of this writing provides pessimistic accounts for social workers striving for professional legitimacy. Drawing upon the practice literature, while appreciating the political nature of any intervention, is an emerging body of case studies depicting the daily complexity and situational specificity of community work. What is missing are assessments of the impact of community work What is missing are assessments of the impact of community work which neither overlook the role of skill and strategy nor the political forces for and against change which shape individual, organisational and community responses to issues.
