The writer briefly reviews the literature on family and community care of the aged before developing an argument for aged-sensitive social work practice. An emphasis on the importance of professional training, supervision and practice approaches based on an accurate understanding of the unique 'family culture' of each aged person is underlined. From this context, the potential contribution of a 'family of origin' perspective is presented. Particular attention is given to the emotional costs to some carers who accept 'life-scripts' assigned by their family culture, by the wider community or by some helping professionals. |
