In the decade of the 1980s, the social work profession attempted to meet the challenge by continuing to provide qualitative and effective services to our clients, despite ongoing cuts in funding and resources. The decade of the 1990s is foreseeably bleaker than the previous decade, with the focus moving from 'challenge' to 'sink or swim'. More creative and possibly radical measures will be called upon to counter scant funding and resources, and still meet client need. This article proposes to look at Community Radio as one of many possible options needed to address these ongoing issues. The focus of the article is directed towards rural/remote area communities, as the potential for social work use of community radio is greatest in these areas. An outline of community radio and its relevance to social work practice is given, followed by an assessment of the potential benefits and drawbacks associated with such a move. Finally, the author's involvement with Community Radio in Whyalla, South Australia, is outlined; this being the genesis of the author's involvement in Community Radio.
