Inhoud: Social workers are poorly served by prevailing research strategies. They practise in complex situations and need to establish mutual understanding with those using their services. The dominant quantitative survey methods achieve elegance by abstracting from reality. However, in the course of this, perspectives and environmental situations of target populations may be lost or disregarded, generating systems of service remote from their interests and the realities of their social living. An alternative approach to prevailing research strategies is presented which details a method for studying daily life experience in a small population of self-identified gay men living with HIV/AIDS in the inner suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. In-depth collaborative bimonthly interviews and observations in varied contexts for up to two years are the main strategies. Focus is on the interaction of respondents with various environmental systems whilst managing their lives before and after infection. Emergent formulations can contribute to wider debates on refining measures for costing and quality assurance in ambulatory and inpatient care. Development of such measures has been hampered for the want of person-in-situation data.
