Auteur: Single, Toni
Verschenen in: Australian social work
Paginering: Jaargang 42 (1989) nr. 4 pagina's 21-28
Jaar: 1989-12
Inhoud: This paper addresses issues for the child sexual assault victim and the child care worker, when the alleged offender is a fellow professional. It investigates the feelings of fellow workers and how these might impede subsequent intervention on behalf of the child. Issues of the child's vulnerability in such a situation, especially the difficulties surrounding disclosure, are discussed. The trauma of sexually abused children appearing as witnesses in the adult criminal court is well known. Such trauma is intensified when the alleged offender is a professional of status or power. The large number of acquittals in such cases is discussed as are the problems associated with the child's evidence when she (1)is a former client of the alleged offender. In order to facilitate the management of such difficult cases, some suggestions are made to assist workers in the resolution of their feelings. Recommendations are made with regard to reducing the trauma for the child, especially in the Court situation. Emphasis is placed on the need for more research in this area to assist both the child victim and the workers involved.
