Computer-based client and management information systems are increasingly being introduced into social welfare agencies. Their operation raises substantial questions about the organisation of social welfare; questions which are often not considered in adopting such systems. These include the role of case recording; the construction of relationships with clients; the management of professional supervision and peer review; and the administrative rules, worker behaviours and organisational policies of information management. The establishment of a computer-based client information system in the New South Wales Department of Family and Community Services highlights this. |
