Despite increasing research interest in single fathers in some other countries, this particular group of men continue to be an unnoticed group in Australian society. Several possible reasons for this relative lack of interest in single fathers, as compared to single mothers, are discussed. The author briefly reviews the few available Australian studies of single fathers and argues that social scientists ought to direct Increased research activities towards this group. The author argues that research in this area is important both as a first step in developing more responsive social policies and welfare services, and as an avenue for challenging current ideological imperatives about the nature of relationships between fathers and their children. Finally, the author's own research in progress is briefly outlined. |
