The advances in diagnostic and therapeutic technology in the treatment of young people with cancer have meant that many often feel the full force of the technological imperative. The paper argues that this philosophy, in addition to promoting the valuing of things over people, may also create serious conflicts for health care professionals. It is suggested that the result of such an all-pervasive orientation may well be institutional abuse, whereby the young cancer patient's right to psychosocial programming aimed at preventing or ameliorating distress may be forgone. |
