The development of a self-help organisation within a psychiatric day hospital setting is described. Beginning as a low-key discussion group for men on gender issues, the group developed into a cohesive group with strong norms, a development which was disparate with worker expectations. A central theme emerged through the group sessions and threads of continuity facilitated individual change in the men within the group context. The direction of change which the men defined for themselves eventuated in the establishment of a self-help organisation for clients of the hospital. |
