Social Work as a Profession: the South Australian Perspective

Titel: Social Work as a Profession: the South Australian Perspective
Auteur: Martin, Elaine M. W.
Verschenen in: Australian social work
Paginering: Jaargang 40 (1987) nr. 2 pagina's 11-18
Jaar: 1987-06
Inhoud: It is important that we know and understand how social work developed in this State, as in any other environment in which our profession may practice. We need to know how and why present situations came about - present forms of social work practice, the present functions and status of social work in employing organisations, the present expectations and attitudes of various client groups to social work and welfare services - especially if we wish to change these situations; and we must diagnose the trends and directions of change if we aim to influence them. We need to know about social workers' past efforts, successful and unsuccessful, if we are to improve upon them. We must take the past seriously, not just as a source of reminiscences - though these may be fascinating and fun - but as a source of practice wisdom, so that each cohort of social workers does not have to learn the same lessons all over again at the expense of its clients and the community.
