The American Health care system is a high cost one, consisting of a mixture of public funding and regulation, private insurance and market forces. Moves towards de-regulation and cost minimisation expose social workers in health care to professional uncertainty and generate a need to demonstrate the cost-effectiveness of their role, especially in relation to the hospital system. Overseas experience seems likely to have relevance for planning and implementing appropriate action in the local scene. |
