Alternative Methodologies In Teaching: Simulation of Parenting with an Egg

Titel: Alternative Methodologies In Teaching: Simulation of Parenting with an Egg
Auteur: James, Deirdre
Verschenen in: Australian social work
Paginering: Jaargang 39 (1986) nr. 1 pagina's 3-8
Jaar: 1986-03
Inhoud: A simulation study utilising an egg to represent an infant was conducted as a class exercise. Students parented an egg for a week, and kept records of their activities with, and feelings about, their infants. These records provided the basis for an assignment written on the experience of parenting and the issues it raised for them. The purpose of the study was to stimulate a critical approach to some of the literature on parenting, particularly that which is based on a biological model of human interaction. It is argued that both attachment and bonding approaches to parenthood are often used in a way which implies a biological approach, and that they are suspect for their simplistic basis, and their social impact. The method adopted in the class exercise proved useful in realising the aim of stimulating in students critical approaches to the literature, and also realistic appraisals to the demands of parenting.
