After a latency period of some years, Vietnam veterans are now presenting to mental health professionals with a variety of psychosocial difficulties in the areas of interpersonal relationships, personality constriction, fears of uncontrollable violence, and preoccupations with traumatic memories. These are often accompanied by disabling psychiatric symptoms and a cynicism and distrust of authority figures and bureaucratic organisations. The psychotherapy of these young ex-servicemen centres on the reliving of their traumatic experiences within a holding and sharing relationship. Issues of loss of control, defensive avoidance, anger and devaluation of the therapist, and the therapist's handling of his own emotional responses frequently occur and are discussed. |
