Inhoud: Farm families are often neglected as a potential client group for rural social workers, and their particular needs are not well understood. This paper outlines three major sources of problems for farm families - from the farming system itself, from the small business nature of farming and from the family system. It discusses barriers to social work intervention such as the nature of the social service delivery system and social worker insensitivity. A number of strategies for social workers to overcome these barriers are suggested. These focus on the individual, the rural community and on the helping agencies. They include networking farm families, using existing rural organisations and media, utilising continuing education programmes and developing interpersonal skills among rural resource people. Despite previous low levels of contact it is possible for social workers to have an impact on farm family problems.
