During the student rebellions at Columbia University in the late 1960's, the social work students were notably absent from the action. “And where were you when we needed you?” asked the leaders of the rebellion. The social workers' response was painfully real. “Our survival in school”, they contended, “is based not only on our ability to do the required intellectual work, but also upon our aptitudes, behaviours and our activities. Participation can easily spell the end of our professional careers.” |
