Inhoud: This paper explores the relationship between social theory and social reform. It is argued that we are faced by dichotomous choices between traditional/consensus and radical/conflict approaches to social reform, and that proponents of each perspective fail to explore the limitations of their views. The common ground which exists between the more conservative and radical approaches is thus frequently ignored - theoretical entrenchment reduces our understanding of social reformism. Some of the reasons for entrenchment are explored and the issues which are thereby neglected are identified. It is argued further that the subjective evaluations of poor and oppressed people may not tally with our own, and their right to influence outcomes is defended. The paper concludes with a limited defence of small scale change.
