Inhoud: The increased popularity of cohabitation in modern societies and the numerous problems associated with this life style make the examination of the quality of life in unmarried cohabitation today more urgent than ever before. Does this life style provide serious advantages to those living in it, or is the hypothesis about superiority of unmarried cohabitation over marriage a myth and an illusion? This paper examines the advantages and limitations of de facto relationships in comparison to marriage, and shows that law reforms and attitudinal changes in modern societies have eliminated the basic problems of marriage, which cohabitation was supposed to solve, and have reduced the freedom and high degree of self determination of the cohabitants. It is then argued that cohabitation (here and in the following discussion meaning unmarried cohabitation) is not superior to matrimony, and that marriage is still the most adequate way of establishing a secure and convenient family life.
