The problem of socialization into a social work agency as a long-term process which affects the relationship amongst professional, agency and client orientations is considered in light of a cross-cultural research study. It is suggested that differences found in the orientations of new graduates compared with social workers of longer experience warrant changes in agency policies and fieldwork training, and the development of continuing education programmes. Such changes should facilitate both the successful adaptation of new graduates to the realities of agency practice and the maintenance of a professional identity in the interests of social work clients. |
