This paper records a personal account of burnout and briefly defines and discusses the general characteristics of burnout. As a result of personal experience and observation of colleagues having similar fortunes, the authors developed a series of practical techniques for preventing and dealing with burnout. These are presented and discussed. They are: The need for enough sleep; for pleasurable physical activities; food and time to digest it; keeping in touch with one's own internal environment; recreational activities; comfortable working environment; awareness of hazards; looking after oneself (and being selfish); time off/time out; warm nurturing relationships; people to talk to about problems; honesty; realistic expectations and timetables; time to be crazy; and stimulation. The authors conclude that education about burnout and how to manage it should be included in professional training for social workers and other helping professionals. |
