Social work, like many other human service occupations, tends to be weighed down with the often insurmountable and acute needs of those whom it is meant to serve and it is rare that we workers look backwards to seek a fresh perspective on the magnitude and character of our present problems and the ways we attempt to deal with them. Yet to ignore our history condemns us to live with our ignorance and to run the danger of continuously being pre-occupied with reinventing the wheel. This became a reality for me when, in struggling to define my own function as a social worker, I stumbled on the writings of Bertha Capen Reynolds. |
