This article has been written as a descriptive study of the treatment of approximately 350 chronically incapacitated asthmatic children who were treated at the residential Asthma Unit located at Margaret Reid Orthopaedic Hospital in St. Ives, N.S.W., from 1963 to 1975. Although the primary focus is on the role of the social worker in the treatment programme, the aim is to demonstrate how effective the team approach can be in the treatment of a psychosomatic illness, with treatment extending to the total family. |
