This paper surveys some aspects of the professional social work knowledge base, focusing critical attention on both “theory for social work” (the behavioural science contribution) and “practice theory” (derived from professional activities). Recognition of some serious gaps in and limitations of the knowledge base leads to some speculation about problems in the application of knowledge in everyday practical situations: specifically, social workers are advised to pay attention to the possibility of an hiatus between knowledge and action in professional work. The essay concludes by raising some broad issues following from the more detailed points raised before. |
