The frivolous title of this paper should not detract from the seriousness of the theme. A growing number of people feel that the psychiatric system in New South Wales is developing in a way that violates patients' rights, and counters positive social change. This paper is not an objective treatise. My style is personal and narrative rather than formal and scholastic. The first section, “The Madness Machine”, briefly discusses the dimensions and directions of the psychiatric system. The second section, “High Priests with Blunt Tools”, works from the proposition that psychiatry is an under-trained occupational group. The third section, “Medical Model—Towards a Brain-controlled Community?”, discusses the dominant philosophy and technique of the system. The last section, “The Counter Movement”, briefly discusses a current response to the systems view of man and society.
