Social workers are more interested in knowing where their profession is heading than from where it derived—and rightly so. However, origins have a way of shaping outcomes to an extent that the day-to-day practitioner is not always aware; I would argue that knowledge of the origins of casework is necessary if social workers are to understand the present state of their profession and achieve a greater measure of control over the processes that have shaped one of their present roles. |
