In assessing a student's success in a course designed to educate for a profession, emphasis is appropriately placed on his performance in the field as well as on his knowledge of theory. In the last analysis the institution responsible for the course takes responsibility for certifying the graduate's readiness to enter the profession as a practitioner. In social work education the assessment of practice performance is made on the basis of progressive judgments of field supervisors as interpreted by members of course teaching staff. The validity of these judgments is related to the professional competence of the supervisors and teachers but the assessment remains a subjective one. |
