When one considers scientific achievements as well as general level of education, the socialist systems were, for the most part, quite successful in the field of education. The case of Slovenia, a new democracy as well as a newly independent country, differs from many other former socialist countries due to a controversial educational reform at the end of the socialist regime. However, a change in the goals of education, a considerable increase in the number of students, heated controversies in the new pluralist environment, and so forth, were part and parcel of the social change itself. Democratic movements had to find new ways to manage education, while maintaining its quality.
