The purpose of this paper is to describe and illustrate the process of obtaining selected information from large, computerized files, using a modern data base language, and to then pass this data subset to a mathematical model for further processing. The model may be imbedded in the same job step or it may be a separate job step. Similarly, there may be several subsets which must be extracted before the link to a model is made. The paper also demonstrates some of the fundamental advantages of a Data Base Language including macro-type statements, utility calls, hold files, simple sorts and the use of a Data Description Table (DDT) which may be incorporated in a program by a one line Call statement. |
