The discrete compound Poisson distribution can be used to model a number of practical phenomena. In this note we draw attention to a recursion formula which may be used to numerically evaluate the compound Poisson probabilities. Computation of each probability point requires the evaluation of only one simple convolution, and can be carried out in most cases by hand or with the aid of a small calculator. The procedure is illustrated by two simple inventory system examples. |
