A direct search approach to the rectilinear facilities location problem is considered in detail. This approach is shown to be a specialization of the primal simplex method for linear programming. A necessary condition for optimality is also shown to be sufficient in special cases. The main difficulties associated with the direct search approach are discussed, and a few simple examples are given as an illustration. |
