Interrelated quality characteristics for a river basin are considered in the formulation of a dynamic programming model to minimize total cooling and treatment costs. The characteristics, temperature and dissolved oxygen, as well as bio-degradable organic wastes are considered as state variables, and decision variables are cooling level and treatment level at each stage. This model differs from earlier work which concentrated on dissolved oxygen in that three interrelated state variables are considered. Temperature, temperature rise, and dissolved oxygen are constrained at each stage, significantly reducing the feasible region over which search is necessary. |
