A frequently occurring task is the finding of the present value and/or the annualized uniform equivalent of a series of end-of-year cash amounts. The computation may always be carried out through a year-by-year procedure, but this may be an arduous task when the number of years is large and a programmed computer is not used. Alternative formulas are developed which shorten the manual calculation, provided that the end-of-year cash amounts vary with time according to a polynomial of low degree. Extensive use is made of Newton's interpolation formula, Homer's scheme, and difference tables. A numerical example is provided. |
