An initial forecast is required to start up an exponential smoothing forecasting system. This paper examines initialization procedures proposed in the literature, analyzes their weighting of initial predictions and available historical data, and proposes a new initialization procedure. This new procedure permits independent weighting of an initial prediction and the rate of discounting historical data. |
