Industrial engineers are increasingly involved in the specification of computer based control systems as a part of the process of plant layout and design. The distinction between maxi-, mini- and microcomputer systems is rapidly becoming academic. The device which performs the program and computational logic, the central processing unit (CPU), is evolving toward small, powerful microprocessor based systems that find applications at all levels of the plant control system. For this reason the term microprocessor is used in this paper as a generic term for the logic processing element in the control system. The purpose of this paper is to examine the steps involved in functionally specifying a microprocessor based control system for an industrial control application. The application is a microprocessor based-controller for a large solar power plant composed of a number of identical machines. The solar power plant was designed under contract to the U.S. Department of Energy as a project entitled “The Trans-Pecos Photovoltaic Concentrating Experiment.” The functional specifications developed are representative of the level of detail required to obtain responsive bids from vendors of industrial control systems. |
