A simulation model of the execution of tasks on a multiprogrammed computer is used to test the impact of the environment on the relative performance of several scheduling policies. The environmental factors tested include: the job mix effect of multiprogramming, the run time distribution of incoming jobs, the space capacity of the system and the occurrence of very high CPU bound jobs. The specific conclusions lead to the general statement that changes in the environment significantly affect actual performance. The relative order of performance of the different policies in general was not affected by the environment. |
