A description of analysis undertaken to evaluate and improve the basic design of an automated hospital materials handling system is provided as an example of the benefits of applied operations research. In this study, simulation was combined with the professional experience of the system vendors and designers to evaluate a critical segment of the system and to estimate the relative effectiveness of potential system alternatives. As a result, a major system redesign was made which will result in significant savings compared with the original system design. |
