Monoclonal Antibodies for Septic Shock: In or Out of the Barn Door? * * This is a preliminary report on a joint Thomas Jefferson University Hospital/University Hospital Consortium project to evaluate the use of antiendotoxin monoclonal antibodies. Forthcoming clinical guidelines for their use, in final draft form at this writing, have not been evaluated, but given the issue’s timeliness the authors offer their findings for discussion. The drug use surveillance component of this project was supported in part by Centocor, Inc (Malvern, Penn), which manufactures Centoxin, an antiendotoxin monoclonal antibody. The authors have collectively signed a financial disclosure statement and affirm the absence of any financial conflict of interest. The opinions expressed herein are solely those of the authors and not the University Hospital Consortium or any of its members. The $3,750 cost of the human monoclonal antibody against endotoxin is derived from the market price in Germany, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands; the final U.S. price has not been determined.
