The Morewitz Criteria was developed to predict the quantity of aerosol mass entering a tube or passageway that would result in a particle plug precluding further aerosol transport. However, a few studies have shown the criteria to be invalid for certain situations. This paper proposes an initial test condition that must first be met before the Morewitz Criteria is considered valid. This test condition, based on Davies' Criteria for still air sampling, identifies the physical mechanism responsible for the initial particle deposition and subsequent deposit growth that leads to a plug, provides an explanation for the observed location of particle plugs in tubes, and defines the range of useful application of the Morewitz Criteria. |
