Inhoud: The products of incomplete combustion (PICs), which include polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and elemental carbon, are an important class of toxic air pollutants. Once emitted to the atmosphere, the size distribution of the total particulate carbon changes as a result of gas-to-particle conversion processes, and the PAHs react chemically. A systematic procedure has been developed for relating ambient air quality to emission sources for PICs. The properties of interest are the aerosol mass distribution and the PAH concentration, both as functions of particle size. The source and receptor aerosol properties are linked through the atmospheric residence time distribution and through the rates of the physical and chemical processes that cause the changes between source and receptor. The analysis was applied to the Los Angeles atmosphere, for which the most complete data are available. The results indicate that the residence time distribution is bimodal; about 40% of the PIC atmospheric mass has very short residence times and 25% a longer residence time. As a result of reaction and volatilization the PAH mass ratio to elemental carbon is smaller in the atmosphere than at the source. A generalized diagram relating this ratio to a first-order decay coefficient was obtained using data from the literature. The form of the curve depends on the atmospheric residence time distribution.
