The contribution of motor vehicle emissions to total suspended participate matter (TSP) of air samples collected in Vila Isabel, a residential area in the city of Rio de Janeiro, has been estimated using benzo(k)fluoranthene (BkF), benzo(ghi)perylene (BGP), and indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene (IND) as tracers. The vehicular fleet at the site (about 70%-80% gasohol, 10%-20% ethanol, 8%-10% diesel) contributed 21% of the atmospheric TSP. When both elemental carbon and volatilizable organic carbon were used as tracers, a 24% contribution was obtained for the same set of samples.
