The goal of this paper is to present the results of atmospheric observations carried out to study the formation of sulfate ions on the surface of elemental carbon particles. The observations were made in our institute in suburban Budapest and at a regional background station in Hungary. Data show that in summertime sulfate and carbon aerosol are externally mixed, while in winter an important part of sulfate particles is internally mixed with elemental carbon. In winter a correlation was found between the mass concentration of sulfate and elemental carbon. We conclude that the catalytic heterogeneous oxidation of SO2 may be an important sulfate formation mechanism in winter, especially at night. |
