A generator of the evaporation-condensation type for the production of monodisperse aerosols has been designed and tested. Dibutyl phthalate aerosols in the submicron range and of narrow size distribution were generated with excellent reproducibility when nucleated with NaCl. The particle size was determined from light scattering data using the polarization ratio method, and with a light microscope. The generator is capable of maintaining a stable output of aerosol over a long period of time. The effects of the flow rate of the carrier gas, the nuclei concentration, the temperature of the furnace used for making the NaCl nuclei, and the heating temperature on the aerosol output are reported. |
