Contents: Due to increasing restrictions placed on land disposal, innovative methods of hazardous waste treatment are needed. In recent years, membrane separation has gained increasing popularity for the recycling and reduction of hazardous wastes. The three major types of membrane separation technologies in use today are reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, and electrodialysis. The applications and design considerations, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each of these technologies, will be outlined in this article. Cost data will also be provided when available.
