Much has been written during the past few years regarding the need for alternate sources of energy to replace or supplement the waning supplies of fossil fuels in the nation. One such source is the substantial amount of energy found in solid wastes. The amount of the energy is a function of the composition and carbon content of the wastes. The bound energy can be converted through a variety of thermal, physical, chemical, and biological processes into a fuel that may be either gaseous or liquid. Or, a solid fuel can be produced from the wastes through mechanical processing. Reported estimates of the energy potential of the wastes indicate an amount sufficient to meet 2 to 8% of the need of the nation. In the review, the reported estimates are evaluated; existing and proposed methodologies for recovering the energy are assessed; and economical, institutional, and environmental impediments are analyzed.
