The paper will cover the characteristics of the effluents, an evaluation of its pretreatment procedures, and a review of the applicable treatment methods. The pretreatment steps to be discussed will be the wastewater retention for collection, equalization and tar separation, flotation for removal of residual oils and tar, phenol extraction, ammonia stripping, and the wastewater dilution. Subsequently, biological and physicochemical methods of the wastewater treatment will be reviewed with an emphasis on a theoretical explanation of their particular mechanisms. An analysis of the fate of basic pollutants during the specific pretreatment and treatment steps, and evaluation of technological possibilities to meet the treatment requirements will complete this study.
