  The case for a voluntary system for credentialing evaluators1 1 The author gratefully acknowledges the suggestions of Thomas Berstene, Leonard Bickman, and Cheri Levenson over the past several years. Many of their perspectives helped to guide his thinking in regard to this paper. He would also like to thank Leonard Bickman for inviting him to chair the AEA certification task force, for providing input for the pro side of the 1998 AEA debate on certification, and for offering ideas for some of the entries in Table 1.
