The topic of cochlear implantation for adults and children has stimulated a great amount of discussion over the past few years. The following article reviews the basic components of the cochlear implant, and discusses the evaluation procedures and criteria for candidacy. It is written for rehabilitation professionals who are not as yet familiar with the device and may have an opportunity, in the future, to work with an individual who was implanted. The experiences encountered by an individual who is deaf blind during the process of cochlear implantation is presented. |
