Community-based rehabilitation in the Philippines using self-employment or income generation projects is an example of rehabilitation practiced in many developing countries. Bacolod is located on the island of Negros a few hundred miles south of Manila. This article utilizes a number of individual examples of persons with disabilities becoming self-employed able to generate their own income through a community-based model of rehabilitation. While seemingly small and trivial by western standards, these descriptions of successful outcome suggest the need to understand the local socioeconomic context of rehabilitation. The end results of this program are individuals with disabilities being productive and valued for their contributions to society. |
