This article eulogizes the Viceroy Manuel de Amat and Junyent for the architecture and urbanism that took shape during his reign. Based on documents, Humberto Rodríguez recreates the works that once embellished the colonial city of Lima. The author also studies certain unassigned works and makes possible their atribution to Amat, the enlightened viceroy. Like many intellectuals of his time, Amat saw in Rome an eternal city. Both architect and viceroy, he was influenced by these ideas to transform the ¿City of the Kings¿ into an eternal city. Inspired by baroque Italian models, the viceroy adapted innovations to the topology and necessities of Peru, with a modernizing impulse that was never to be repeated |
