Inhoud: The production of ethanol in Brazil has contributed towards the replacement of fossil fuels over the past few years. Among those initiatives, the production of ethanol from cellulose is one of the areas drawing the interest of different research centers in developed countries. Hence, the production of ethanol opens up new perspectives for Brazilian states. In light of this backdrop, this paper aims at characterizing and understanding the state of the art in different technological courses and production configuration alternatives present in different parts of the world regarding cellulose-based ethanol production. To that end, research was conducted at the lumber and industrial companies connected to cellulose-based ethanol production. In other parts of the globe, the ability of planned forests to provide energy is promising, given the positive energy balance and the increase in carbon dioxide sequestering, paramount in times of global warming. The association with other crops may become a source of productive diversity for small farmers residing in degraded areas or those presenting low economic dynamism. There is the need to develop new research efforts and look more deeply into the environmental issues involved, as well as further assessment on the economic and social viability of such projects.Key-words: cellulosic ethanol, biorefinery, biomass, agrienergy, bioenergy.
